The history of Mawgan porth village hall
Some years ago, Jane Wailes, along with her husband Phil, wrote a serialised account of the development of Mawgan Porth for the Parish News. In that account, she described how Marjorie Taylor initiated the set-up of a branch of the Womens Institute in Mawgan Porth. Initially meetings were held in the Bridge House Cafe but, as this was not practicable in the summer the idea of a communal Hall was born. This was well received in a public meeting and fund raising commenced.
Fortnightly whist drives proved popular but, despite frequent bazaars and jumble sales, progress was slow.
Tim Knight and Gordon Arnold arranged ‘Sea Shore Shambles’, essentially a fair with sideshows, held on the beach on August Bank Holiday for a number of years.
Mr J J Marshall (father of Jack and Stan) started a local football pool, operated by the simple means of adding participants’ contributions to their weekly milk bills and, for a considerable time, this provided a steady income to the building fund.
The site for the Hall had long been reserved but twenty years passed before it became a reality, opening with a ceremony on 14 April 1973.
The hall has remained a popular focal point for the community for over 40 years as it has proved an ideal venue for sport and fitness clubs, birthday and wedding celebrations, evening classes, Council matters, sales, concerts and shows.
